Thousands sign the Petition to reinstate the River Garry.

The Tay District Salmon Fishery Board is applying pressure to reinstate water flows on the Garry system back to something like normal water levels.

At the Scottish Fair, Scone Palace, Perth from 29th June to 1st July, thousands of visitors flocked to the SANA stand in Fisherman's Row to sign the Petition in support of having the Garry once again flowing with water.

As anyone travelling up and down the A9 will know the River Garry remains a dry riverbed for much of the year thanks to a comprehensive network of hydro dams and culverts which intercept the water and divert it elsewhere for use in hydro electricity power generation.

However, under the new European Water Framework Directive it is alleged that exploitation of water resources to these extremes which has such a negative environmental impact is no longer acceptable. Currently there are proposals to arrange to meet with MP's and MSP's on the river bank along with fishery biologists in the very near future, their aim to highlight the true extent of the water abstraction problem and the effect on the plight of the salmon.

More information on reinstaing the Garry and details on which MP to write to can be found on the TDSFB website: RiverGarryReport.htm & Garryhelp.htm
